Using Relaxation
What does it do?
At its best, properly applied relaxation creates physical changes in the body: slowing down the heart rate, controlling the rhythm of breathing, reducing the harmful impact of stress hormones, lowering blood pressure and enhancing the immune system when used regularly. When practising deep relaxation techniques, brain scanning has shown proven changes to sites of the brain linked with concentration, learning, creativity, problem-solving, social skills and emotional balance. It has an immediate powerful physiological effect on the brain, changing the brain waves from “beta waves” to “alpha” or “theta waves” (see Table 1). This is evident in people across all ages and backgrounds.
Table 1: Brainwaves and arousal states
| Brainwaves |
Arousal State |
| Beta-2 | "Stressed brain"; stressed, anxious, agitated, excited |
| Beta-1 | "Working brain"; alert, aroused, active concentration |
| Alpha | "Relaxed, reflecting brain"; relaxation, non-arousal, meditation, hypnosis |
| Theta | "Drowsy, sleeping brain"; dreaming, day-dreaming, deep relaxation, deep meditation, deep hypnosis |
| Delta |
"Sleeping brain"; deep, dreamless sleep |
How can relaxation help me?
If practised regularly, relaxation has been found to increase activity in the part of the brain that has the strongest effect on mood, coping with stress and strain, perceptions of pain, concentration, problem solving, planning and insight.
These
changes, coupled with the impact that relaxation has on reducing
physical stress in the body, means that it has been used to help with a
range of common life difficulties, including:
- Boosting your brainpower
- Boosting your self esteem and confidence
- Enhancing your sex life
- Managing problems with sleep
- Coping with relationship issues
- Anxiety, stress and strain in everyday life
- Low mood and depression
- Managing chronic pain
- Recovering from addictions (including stopping smoking)
- Overcoming phobias
- Body image issues
- Social anxiety
When
used regularly, relaxation can have a profound effect on you, your
