Sex and Stress

Did you know that stress, either short or long term, can have an effect on your sex life?

It is true that for some people stress or arousal can lead to a rush of adrenalin which leads to "furious passion".  It is not all good news however.

Short term extreme stress affects us in a number of ways:
  • It makes us feel exhausted - too tired for romance!
  • We are agitated and "on the move" - it is difficult to settle down
  • In men, stress can cause a temporary impotence - blood flows are redirected to other areas of the body from our "flight or fight" response, having a devastating effect
  • In women, stress hormones cause a loss of libido, or sexual desire
Chronic stress, facing stress long-term over periods of time, is a definite "turn off"
  • It causes a reduction in testosterone for both men and women
  • In men, this is thought to interrupt sperm formation, interfering with fertility
  • Impotence in men, even for a short period of time, can lead to "performance anxiety", where anxiety begins to interfere with natural processes, creating a vicious cycle
  • Stress hormones in women can delay ovulation - if cortisol levels remain high over a period of time this can interfere with menstruation
  • There is a significantly higher percentage of miscarriages in women who are under high levels of stress
Keeping stress hormones at bay will help to reduce all of these effects.  Regular relaxation or meditation and enjoyable exercise is relatively easy to introduce into your weekly routine.
